Short answer: yes. If you smoke, vape or dab THCA, plan on failing a THC drug test exactly like you would with dispensary weed. The test doesn't care that the product was sold as hemp.
The longer answer is worth knowing, because a lot of people learn it the hard way.
Why THCA Fails a THC Test
THCA is the raw, acidic form of THC sitting in the plant. Heat it and it sheds a carboxyl group and turns into delta-9 THC, the same compound in any cannabis. A lighter, a dab rig or a vape does that conversion in a fraction of a second.
So by the time THCA is in your lungs, it's THC. Your liver then breaks THC down into a metabolite called THC-COOH, and that metabolite is what a standard urine test looks for. There's no chemical tag that says "this came from hemp." To the lab, THCA flower and marijuana look identical.
What About Raw THCA?
Eating raw, unheated cannabis is the one gray area, since THCA that never gets heated isn't THC. In real life it doesn't help much. Some THCA converts during drying, curing and storage, and almost nobody uses THCA products without heat. Don't bet a job on it.
How Long THC Stays Detectable
It depends on the test and on how much and how often you use. The ranges below come from published testing data compiled by California NORML.
| Test | Occasional use | Regular use |
|---|---|---|
| Urine | 1 to 7+ days | 1 to 3 weeks, sometimes much longer |
| Blood | 1 to 6 hours | 2 to 7 days |
| Saliva | 1 to 24 hours | Up to about 48 hours |
| Hair | Unlikely | Months |
Urine is the test most employers use, and it's the one that catches people off guard. THC is fat-soluble, so a daily smoker stores it in body fat and releases it slowly for weeks. A few extreme cases of heavy users have tested positive for over three months.
Hair is the long memory. It typically starts showing use about a week after it happens and can reflect roughly the last 90 days, and shampoo won't wash it out.
What the Numbers on a Test Mean
Workplace urine tests don't flag any trace of THC. They use cutoffs. Under federal workplace rules, the first screen flags THC-COOH at 50 ng/mL, and a positive gets confirmed by a more precise lab test at 15 ng/mL. Many private employers follow the same numbers.
Two things follow from that. A single puff days ago may come in under the cutoff. And a urine test measures a leftover metabolite, not whether you're high right now, which is why a regular user can fail a week after their last session.
What Changes How Long It Lasts
- How often you use. This matters more than anything else. Once a month and every day are completely different situations.
- How strong it is. A 90% THCA diamond puts far more THC into your system per hit than flower does.
- Body fat and metabolism. THC is stored in fat, so it clears differently from person to person.
- The test itself. Hair reaches back months. Saliva only covers about a day or two.
"But It's Legal Hemp"
That's true where you bought it, and it doesn't matter to your employer. Drug-free workplace policies test for THC, not for which law the product was sold under, and a positive is a positive. If you're in a job with federal testing, like DOT-regulated driving, aviation or a security clearance, that's not a fight you'll win.
It also cuts the other way. Hemp CBD products aren't totally THC-free either, and full-spectrum CBD has caused failed tests too.
If You Have a Test Coming Up
The only thing that reliably works is time without using. Detox drinks, pills and "cleanses" don't have good evidence behind them, and labs check samples for dilution and tampering. If a test matters to you, stop early and give yourself more time than you think you need.
And if your work tests at all, THCA is probably not the product for you right now. That's the honest answer.
Common Questions
Will one hit of THCA make me fail a drug test?
It can. For an occasional user, a single session may show up in urine for a few days, though it may also fall under the 50 ng/mL cutoff. There's no safe amount to count on.
Do THCA edibles show up on drug tests?
Yes. Edibles are made with heated, activated cannabinoids, so they contain THC and produce the same metabolite.
Can secondhand THCA smoke make me fail?
Saliva tests can briefly pick up secondhand smoke within about an hour. Failing a urine test from secondhand smoke alone is unlikely in normal conditions, but very heavy exposure in a closed space is a different story.
Does THCA show up differently than delta-9 THC?
No. Once heated, THCA becomes delta-9 THC, and a standard test can't tell where it came from.
Do hemp-derived THCA products ever test clean?
Not if they're used the normal way. If you need to pass a test, don't use any THC product, hemp or otherwise.
